Hey students and parents. I really enjoyed the concerts this past month. I was very proud of the kids in their improvement these past couple months. I always say that we should record the first rehearsal of the school year and then listen to it after the concert to see just how much better we have become.
Here are a few comments I have regarding both concerts:
6th grade:
Gallant March and Champions went really well. I was especially happy with the percussion on Champions given how hard that snare drum part is and you never got to practice together as combined bands.
Fury was the highlight of the evening. That was our hardest piece and you pulled it off with flying colors. Way to go!
Mystic Journey had that interesting error by the trumpet section coming in four measures early. That never happened to us in rehearsal. Great contrast of soft and loud sections though. Dillon, great baritone note!
Dynamite was very fun. Great job dancers!
You were well-dressed, well-behaved and acted very professionally. Very nice!
8th grade:
A-Plus was very funny. Great marching percussion/flag entrance. Your mistakes were perfect!
Sing Sing Sing was the best song of the evening. All-around great playing. Good choreography brass. Great dancing Alyssa and Katie.
Monmouth Overture had a wonderful opening passage flutes and Ajay. Very nice playing all around except for the trumpets being a measure ahead for about 16 measures near the beginning.
Wicked was well-played but lacked energy. The lack of dynamics and articulations made it seem like it went on and on and on. We need to work on balance as well. There were times the melody was covered up. More practice at home ladies and gentlemen!
Hits also lacked energy at times. I felt like we started to wear out. Again, more practice at home will lead to greater endurance. There were some very nice moments though.
I loved all the transitional material. Kalley and Alyssa sounded wonderful on that out-of-tune piano. Maddie, you make a good Dorothy. And, Dr. W. "in the house".
Nicely dressed and you acted professionally. Great effort as well. Let's work on practicing more at home!!!!
Would love to hear your comments.

The concert was really fun and exciting. I really enjoyed all of the enthusiasm in the music. I agree that there needed better dynamics but other than that it was really well played.I notice that I heard more thing then what I heard in practice. I enjoyed going up and dancing with the dancers. I have never been so excited to perform in front of a largeer crowd. Mr. Songer did a great job of putting it all together. I just have to say, the saxes were really loud, maybe too loud. I lost track of were I was playing the music because I was sitting right in front of the saxes. But other than that great job. I knew that we wold do a great job. It was really neat that 6th hour and 7th hour combined and did a fantastic ob. What do you think?
ReplyDeletei think gallant march went VERY well. it was one of our easier songs, and i loved it. Champions went great. it was my favorite songs and the whole band did a wonderful job on it. Fury was tough at the ending for the first b flat trumpets. Mr. Songer did a amazing job at conducting that song. for the band Mystic Journey was good just not amazing no offense. Dynamite was very fun. Probably my favorite song. Overall Everybody did a GREAT job! :)
ReplyDeleteI think overall, everybody did a great job. We only had a few mistakes, all of which weren't very noticeable. We did a whole lot better than I thought we would on Mystic Journey. For Fury, I had no idea what the dancers had come up with, and the quick glimpses I had of them looked pretty coordinated, and well thought up. Everyone looked fancy in black and white, and I think the parents and uncles and grandparents were proud.
ReplyDeleteI think the concert was amazing, and that everybody worked really hard, and we did great sort of collaborating with the other hour's band, even though it was our first time playing as a group. Some highlights were FURY because, we picked it up at the beginning of the year with some of us(I mean me too) thinking that " wow. This looks so hard and we will never be able to do it" but we worked together as a band and got it proficient. I agree that most of he concert had a scarce amount of dynamics, and that is something that I, as an individual, will work on. I also think we did a great job keepin time and rhythm, even with the gym's echo level being different than the band room, minus the trumpets accidental early start. Some songs that were really done with ease I think were Gallant March and Dynamite. I had a great time in the concert, and hope to have a blast this year in band.
ReplyDeleteWell, in my opinion, the 8th grade concert was good, but as said could use a little more "oomph" (if that is a word). I agree that A+ went really well, and I think the mistakes made the song awesome! Sing sing sing was really cool, and it was very reminiscent of the Jazz/ Big band era. the entrance was phenomenal in my opinion, and the song was AmAzInG! the Choreography was well done, with mostly everyone participating. Wicked was a bit.... well.... not good. i agree with Mr. Songer when he said that it lacked energy. I think as a band, we have some room for improvment in the amount of energy shown. Hits was a bit of a rollercoster ride, with some parts like "if we ever meet again" and "bad romance" sounding great, and others sounding a bit "iffy". the transitions were really funny and really well done, and it was funny to watch the dorothy skit. kudos to the people who performed stuff during transitions!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Did i need a tie? because i umm..... nevermind :)
P.P.S. TROMBONES ROCK!!!!!!!!!
